A few more HDR shots from the same photo walk as the previous ones.
This is the big cinema in Uppsala, Filmstaden. I only needed three bracketed shots to get the dynamic range here, since the sky wasn't that bright above the houses.

And here five shots, taken about two hours after the photo above.

This is Islandsfallet, from which the river is deep enough for boats to sail south to lake Mälaren.

It's beginning to feel like I'm repeating myself ... Couldn't resist to take a few more pictures of Kvarnfallet last time I went shooting in Uppsala.

I used my Gorillapod to fasten my camera to the iron fence that runs along the river, keeping the shoulder strap around my neck as extra security. Didn't feel like loosing the camera to the ice-cold water below.
I probably looked weird to the people passing by ... but hey, that's photography.

For this last shot (which really was the first) I used the grey (ND) filter I was given for Christmas. Very useful for this kind of stuff to get nice long exposures.

Me and Jenny went to Uppsala over the weekend and among other things I had some fun with my camera in the city centre.

The local paper, Upsala Nya Tidning, put on a firework display every year. This time I didn't have my real tripod with me, only my gorillapod.
I found a granite pillar to rest it on, but this meant I was limited to horizontal shots and couldn't readjust the camera very easily during the display. So all in all I didn't get very many good shots of the fireworks. The one above is pretty much the only interesting one I got.
I got much better shots in 2006:

Anyway, I managed to get a few other nice frames before I headed home. Here is the huge crowd of people making its way away from the castle after the fireworks.

I got the above shot of Uppsala castle and the Gunilla bell tower, or Gunillaklockan as it is called really, as well as one of the Fyris river, or Fyrisån. The sky was lit up with a blue light. Not sure what it was, but it made the pictures pop a bit anyway.

In Uppsala the local council have built a plastic skating rink on Vaksala torg, one of the large market squares in town.
It was officially opened on Sunday and a number of people were trying it out.

After going through my photos from Kvarnfallet again I realized this was probably my favourite.

11 November 2008

During November, 20 different places or buildings in Uppsala have been lit up in various ways. Here the passage under the railway bridge has been lit up with green from what are usually display windows.
I took the shot while on a bike. 1 sec, f/4 at ISO 400 with my Sigma 10-20mm @ 10mm.

This shot turned out slightly more interesting than I thought it would when I took it a few weeks ago, thanks to the guys who look like they're holding hands. (I don't think they were though.)

Here's another photo on the love theme with an unknowing subject:

A few more general Uppsala motifs:

Here's a tip for those of you who have one of Canon's digital EOS cameras (30D, 5D, 1D Mark II, 400D) and possibly others too:
Turn the contrast down to -4.
This may sound strange. Won't that make my pictures grey and boring?!
you might think.
No, it won't. But it will bring out more detail in highlights and shadows. It gives the impression of increasing the dynamic range in the photos, even though – technically – it doesn't.
Below are two example photos. The shown image is at contrast 0. Hover the image to see contrast -4.

So ... the last few days or so I've been re-developing all my (~2200) raw image files with the contrast set to -4.
:-)
